Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a form of Chinese martial arts. When translated, Tai Chi Chuan means Supreme Ultimate Force. Tai Chi is related to the Chinese concept of yin-yang. Ying yang is a balance of forces in everything. By using the fist those that do Tai Chi are thought of as using the fist to bring about supreme or ultimate discipline.

Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the West, is thought of as a practice that closely resembles yoga. There is a meditative portion that is combined with action. Tai Chi is a slow ad soft type of practice that has many movements that have been taking from the animal kingdom. Tai Chi is meant to be practiced in a soft and gentle manner.

Depending on whom is teaching Tai Chi, the focus can be on the actual exercises or the meditative part of the practice. Some of the movements that are taught in Tai Chi classes are taken right from marital arts.

Tai Chi is classified as a martial art but it is typically not practiced for that reason. Instead tai chi is done to reach a certain state of meditation. Chi is a concept that can be found in Chinese medicine. It means that a vital force that animates that body and the practice of Tai Chi which means that chi should be within the body.

The circulation of chi through the nervous and vascular systems, much like the acupuncture and a few of the other healing arts that come form the same part of the world. Tai Chi also works to build a calm and tranquil mind. This is a desirable state for both the practice of tai Chi and in everyday life.

The proper alignment of tai Chi movements is good for both the exercises as well as the rest of life. By achieving balance and fine motor control the way that one moves will improve overall. Tai Chi has been used by some to help with body aches and pain as well as to work on meditative poses.

Tai Chi is gentle, but there are some martial exercises that are incorporated into the practice. There is a set of Tai Chi moves called push hands that are designed to increase the sensitivity of touch and response between two people. Using another person’s chi is the goal of this exercise.

Tai Chi is a great marital art to learn. It is often referred to as a set of slow motion combat moves. These exercises are a great way to get in touch with one’s chi.
