Pilates History
Pilates have become very popular in the United States. Suddenly Pilates is one of the most practiced exercises in the country. This seems to be a sudden craze that came from no where. However, Pilates has been around for much longer than most people think it has.
Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates, the man that developed the exercises. He based the development of these exercises on several ideas. The first Americans to do Pilates were mostly dancers in New York.
Joseph Pilates was a sickly child living in Germany in the late 19th century. Born in 1880 Pilates dealt with everything from asthma to rheumatic fever in hi young years. However, he did not let these ailments stop him from excelling in body building and gymnastics.
After moving to England and being interned on the Isle of Man during World War I, Pilates made sure that his subjects were in shape. He did so by having them follow exercise regiments that he had designed. This paid off well for his subject because none of them were stricken in the influenza epidemic that occurred after the war.
